The power of positive thinking. You hear often how thinking positively can change your life and help you reach your goals and desires. It couldn’t be more true. According to the Law of Attraction, the key to personal development and rapid manifestation of your desires is maintaining a positive mind-set, and feeling the corresponding emotions.
The problem is that it’s sometimes easier said than done. We want to think positive thoughts and empower ourselves. However, the negative thoughts of doubt, worry, frustration, or any other thought that doesn’t feel good interferes and takes over, only causing more frustration.
The question then is how to get rid of these negative thoughts. In my study of this topic and my pursuit to remove my own negative thinking, I have found these suggestions that I pass on to you. They are three steps you can take to help remove negative thoughts. They may be different than some of the traditional ones you may have seen, such as smiling more, meditating, and the like. Those tips are helpful and they work, but instead I offer you suggestions that will keep you thinking, and are more likely to have lasting impacts.
1. Don’t battle against the negative thoughts – Do you ever notice that the more you resist something, the more it persists? It’s the same with negative thoughts. The more you fight them and try hard to get rid of them, the more they seem to increase in number and intensity. To prevent this, you do the opposite. If you have negative thoughts, simply acknowledge and allow them. This may seem counterproductive, especially as you are trying to get rid of them. However, when you acknowledge and allow the thoughts, you prevent the resistance what is caused when you try to forcefully remove them. When I do this, I experience a greater peace almost immediately. As a result, I am able to think more clearly which allows me to think more positively. The same will happen for you.
2. Know that the power is yours – It is easy for thoughts to take over and run as out of control as a runaway train. However, you need to know that you are the one who has ultimate control of your thoughts. And what are thoughts anyway? They are simply words or pictures that flash across your mind. When you begin to see thoughts that way, as temporary flashes in your mind, it is very empowering. When you begin to control your thoughts instead of letting them control you, then you are the master of your own fate. A psychologist taught me a technique to help do this that I share with you. He recommends to take several times a day and simply observe your thoughts. When a negative one crosses your mind, first acknowledge the thought. Let it know that it’s even ok that it is in your mind. Then let it know that you are the master of your thoughts, and gently let it fly away like or bird or butterfly. Watch as it disappears from your mind. As you practice this, it will get more natural and you will easily be able to remove these thoughts.
3. Gradual positive displacement – As mentioned, you don’t get rid of negative thoughts by forcing them out. Instead you have to remove them and gradually replace them with positive thoughts. Think of a glass full of mud. In order to turn the glass from dirty to clean, you cannot simply dump all of the mud out at once. You need to gradually run clean water through the glass. Eventually, the clean water replaces the dirt. As you continue to do this, the glass is completely clean. It is the same with our thoughts. Gradually replace negative thoughts with more positive ones until the positive ones take over. You can do this by using positive affirmations, visualization, and the like. This works well because you avoid forcing out the negative and making the situation worse. Ultimately it’s those positive thoughts that inspire you to the action you need to take to get where you want to go.
